Teaching English in Thailand: Things You Need to Know

Finding a Job

This can be one of the most difficult and frustrating parts of going to Thailand to teach and travel.  There are thousands of schools in Thailand and they all teach English as a second language.  Most of these schools do not have native English speakers to teach English.  This is done by Thai teachers that have a mediocre ability to speak English. There are many English teach placement agencies in Thailand to help with placing you with a good school.  I have listed several of these agencies and have rated them as to how helpful they are for the teachers that work for them.

This is a subject that is as diverse as nearly anyplace in the world.  All the way from majestic rain forest covered mountains to lush valleys covered with jungle to some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the world with warm crystal clear water to swim, snorkel and sail in.  The beauty of the thousands of temples with tall pointed spires and statues of buddha … Ancient temples to explore.. The choices are vast and can be visited during your off time from teaching.

Thai Travel on a Budget

Thailand is as expensive or inexpensive a country to travel in as you want it to be. You can stay in $3 USD per day rooms or $1,000 USD per day luxury resorts. Street food for pennies or gourmet dinners for hundreds. Thailand has it all and it is totally up to you to decide your own budget.  I have some tips for shoestring travel as well as some luxury tours.   It’s all up to you…

TEFL, Tesol ESL Certification

One of the requirements to getting the proper visa and work permit is Certification to teach English as a second language.  There are many ways and places to acquire the proper credentials for teaching in Thailand or anywhere else in the world.  There are several of these programs listed in this section.

Visiting and living in Thailand requires a visa of some sort.   There are several types of visa’s available.. but the one needed for Teaching in Thailand is a Non Immigration type B visa along with a work permit.  These permits can only be applied for and awarded withing Thailand.  There are a lot of procedures and steps and a ton of paperwork that needs to be done by you and the school you will be teaching at.   I have been through this process several times and will help as much as I can.

Travel and Transportation

Traveling to Thailand is relative inexpensive if you are willing to do a little bit of searching on the internet for the best fares.

Traveling  in Thailand is inexpensive but as far as efficient goes.. it depends, one must be aware of the traps that private taxi services can present.  Having said that it is efficient for the most part,  if not always speedy. Unless you travel by plane, long-distance travel in Thailand can be taxing and difficult, especially if a shoestring budget restricts you to hard seats and no air conditioning.  The new BANGKOK BTS SKYTRAIN system has brought Thailand into the 21’st century although it is limited to Bangkok for now.

Nonetheless, the wide range of transport options makes travelling around Thailand easier than elsewhere in Southeast Asia.
